Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has revealed that they tried to sign Hakim Ziyech in January from Dutch side Ajax but the transfer fell through.

The Morroco international will move to Stamford Bridge in the summer after the two clubs reached an agreement on Thursday, in a deal worth around  £37million.

Speakin on Friday, Lampard said he wanted the 26-year-old to join them in the recently closed January transfer window, but it did not materialise.

“We tried and it was not possible. We all know how the January window works,” he reported.

“You respect clubs that have top players want to keep them and that was the case. But that is done and we have him for next season. Pleased with that.

“We hope he can bring that bit of creativity, something different for us, scores goals, assists. It is exciting for us as a club and for the fans to know that he will be here next year.” he added.

The former midfielder further hinted at new arrivals in the summer, but was quick to note that they have to be ‘the right ones’.

“We have to worry first about where we are at and trying to come in the top four is the massive priority for us.

“My main concern is that. We are always on the lookout and working together to try and see how we can improve,” he added.

Chelsea will welcome Manchester United on Monday night in an English Premier League match in a crucial fixture that could have a bearing on the top-four race.
